Hello and Happy May!

I have two events to talk to you about. The first is our next general meeting, a free presentation at the Brumbaugh House (5825 Main Street, Elkridge) by Fred Dorsey. We are very excited to announce that Fred will be talking to us about Belmont and the families that lived there. This meeting is open to everyone, and is on Tuesday, May 14th at 7 p.m.. We hope you will join us! Refreshments will be served.

Our second event, on June 8th, is our big fund-raiser of the year, the Brumbaugh Bash, a barbecue and open house to be held at the Brumbaugh House and grounds from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.. The Brumbaugh House will be open for your perusal on that day. We hope you will come and enjoy camaraderie with your neighbors and see what EHS has been able to accomplish inside and outside the house. We cannot continue to maintain the house and grounds, as well as our collection of Elkridge Heritage items, without your support. A flyer for the event is attached. We hope you will share it with your neighbors and friends.

The tickets to the Brumbaugh Bash are $25 per adult ($15 of that is tax deductible), and $10 for children ages 6-12 ($5 of that is tax deductible). Children under age 6 are free. Cook-out food (hamburgers, hotdogs, salads and soft drinks) will be served, and for the adults, there will be beer and wine. There are several ways to purchase tickets. You can pay by check or cash at the May 14th meeting, you can pay on line (see our website, www.elkridgeheritage.org) or you can mail a check to us (made out to Elkridge Heritage Society, 5825 Main Street, Elkridge MD 21075). Please notify someone on the board if you mail us a check. You can email us at info@elkridgeheritage.org or call our curator Mary Bahr at our new EHS phone number, 443-620-3347 (443-620-3EHS).

Our new blog post on Elkridge Patch has this information and more:

Our speaker will be Author Frank Crowson who will talk about growing up in Lower Elkridge. Tickets are $15.00 and the event will include dessert and coffee/tea at the Elkridge Furnace Inn. See this link for information:

Also, Mary started a “Historic Humor” column with her original cartoons. Enjoy! Also, speaking of Frank Crowson, she put a review of one of his books in the “Knit’n & Pic’n” column. She really enjoyed the book, and hopes our EHS friends will too.

We are very excited to announce that Betsy McMillion of the Patapsco Heritage Greenway will be speaking about the history of villages and mills along the Patapsco. We hope you can attend. We are in partnership with the Greenway, and have many interests in common, so we hope you will support both organizations by attending this very interesting presentation.

Date: Tuesday, March 12, 2013
Place: The Brumbaugh House, 5825 Main St. Elkridge, MD 21075
Time: 7pm-8pm (or so)
More information: info@elkridgeheritage.org

The cost is free, BUT we will be selling tickets for our first fundraiser of the year, an Elkridge Furnace Inn night. We were extremely fortunate in booking gifted Maryland author and poet, Frank Crowson, to speak about growing up in Lower Elkridge, which is an important topic which we have not had the opportunity to explore thus far. Raised in Lower Elkridge, Mr. Crowson went to Elkridge High School with a gift for chemistry. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he served for twenty-five years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As a civilian, Mr. Crowson worked as a professional nuclear engineer. He designed and constructed a number of the nation’s nuclear reactors and fossil fuel stations. With two other engineers, he established CDP Product Development Corp. and has been issued four U.S. patents. His first book, “Bearing False Witness” was published in 1997. This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity, as Mr. Crowson is selling his house and moving to Arizona this summer.

Date: Tuesday, April 9, 2013
Place:The Elkridge Furnace Inn, 5745 Furnace Ave. Elkridge, MD 21075
Time: 7pm-8:30 pm (or so)
Cost: $15.00 per person for dessert and coffee or tea
More information: info@elkridgeheritage.org

So bring your money to the March meeting and buy tickets to this extraordinary event! We can take cash or check, and the website will soon have a PayPal option available.

Sincerely,

Tina Barton, EHS Communications Secretary

Please see our Calendar of Events Page for the up-coming events. March 12 at 7pm is our next general meeting, at the Brumbaugh House. Please be sure to attend! For that meeting, we are pleased to have Betsy McMillion present a history of the villages along the Patapsco, courtesy of the Patapsco Heritage Greenway. We are also working on an April event, which is not yet on our calendar, but please pencil in April 9th at 7pm, at the Elkridge Furnace Inn, where we hope to have Frank Crowson speak about the history of Lower Elkridge. Our May 14th event will be a presentation on Belmont by Fred Dorsey, at the Brumbaugh House at 7pm. Keep an eye on our website for updates.

We are working on our major fund-raiser of the year, the first annual Brumbaugh Barbeque on June 8th, starting at 4pm. It is envisioned as an adult-only event with beer and wine tastings, and lots of good food. We anticipate the tickets being $25 a person. We will be publishing more details as they become available.

Our curator, Mary Bahr, wrote a humorous poem about the history of Elkridge, with artwork by Mary and her father Leonard Bahr. Please be sure to read it. You can find it under the “Knit’n & Pick’n” tab, or click here: http://elkridgeheritage.org/knitn-picn/21813-the-elks-ridge/.

Finally, we have opened a store! We only have two items so far. Our featured item is a $75 print of a water color by well-known Elkridge artist, the late Florence Bahr. It is suitable for framing and comes with documentation as to its authenticiy. The other item is a book by Elkridge author Christine Barton, entitled “The Long Journey of Mother Turtle,” a children’s story about a turtle who is transported from West Virginia to Rockburn Park in Elkridge, and has to find her way back home again. There are limited quantities of each. Profits will be donated to EHS.
