This is an interesting document in the Maryland Archives (see link) about a school house that was on what is now Old Washington Rd. It is currently (2023) a private residence, on the south end of Old Washington Rd. Land was originally conveyed by the Murray Family 1841 for the price of $15, to trustees for a public school in the Howard District Anne Arundel County, and a primary school was described in the location around 1860. But it is believed that the current building that was known as Elkridge Primary School No. 1 was built around 1880. By 1912, the land was sold and the building became a private residence. The apartment building further north on Old Washington Rd became the new Public School No 1, and then it became the high school, and then it became the elementary school when the brick building was built as the new High School, and then the brick one became the elementary school. What a tangled web!
I (Tina Barton) thought perhaps the photo below showed students at this school, but I’m assured that this was another school in Lower Elkridge on School House Lane. There is another entry in the Schools section of the Elkridge Knowledge Base for that school.
