In researching the deeds to Melville Chapel, something interesting popped up. Elk Ridge Landing had a Lyceum. It was probably only for white men, but it is interesting nonetheless. It was incorporated in 1835. It is presumed that the Lyceum lost patronage after about 15 years because the building was sold in 1850. As another interesting aside, what is now the Melville Cemetery was then set aside as a public burial ground, as described in the deeds.
