New Businesses Planned for Elkridge Village Center Three businesses, Commercial & Farmers Bank, Burger King, and Jiffy Lube, are set to build on Route 1 near Montgomery Road, forming the Elkridge Village Center. The bank expects to open in the second quarter of 1998, featuring drive-through lanes and a loan officer. Burger King will be located north of the bank, and Jiffy Lube, with franchisee Robert “Ronnie” Bowman, will be to the south.
Jiffy Lube Expanding, Chrystal Bay Seafood Open Robert “Ronnie” Bowman mentioned that Sears is establishing Jiffy Lubes in their stores, with over 1,100 locations nationwide. Chrystal Bay Seafood, owned by Ray Chrystal, is now open on Route 1 where Doyle’s Insurance used to be, offering both retail and wholesale seafood. New Elkridge ZIP Code Affects Mailing The current edition of The Viaduct uses the new Elkridge ZIP Code, 21075, leading to a significant increase in residences reached, but also higher expenses for printing and postage. The newspaper is seeking new advertisers to help support its growth, with a current circulation exceeding 15,000.
Airplane Noise Expected Over Elkridge Due to BWI Runway Work Jet airplane noise, experienced in late September and early October, will mostly cease but will resume on weeknights in early to mid-November due to grooving work on BWI’s main runway, leading to more flights over Elkridge. This is considered temporary and an improvement over past extensive use of those runways due to cooperation with BWI officials.
Planning and Zoning Updates: Old Elementary School, Food Lion, Amoco, Exxon, Accessory Apartments The Elkridge Elementary School Surplus Committee will continue seeking funding sources for the old school building until next spring. An appeal against the Food Lion construction between Waterloo Road and Old Waterloo Road has had its hearing canceled. The Planning Board approved Eastern Petroleum Corporation’s request for an increase in pumps and a convenience store at the Amoco station. The Lyndwood Square proposal for an Exxon gas station/convenience store is undergoing further study. A public hearing was held on an amendment to permit accessory apartments in Traditional Neighborhood Developments, and it is going to the County Council with a hearing scheduled for October 6th.
Elkridge Pancake Breakfast Walk Scheduled The Freestate Happy Wanderers will hold a non-competitive 5K and 12K walk on Saturday, October 11, 1997, at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast.
Elkridge Fights Adult Entertainment Zoning Shift Elkridge successfully fought a proposed trash transfer station but now faces a potential zoning change pushed by Ellicott City residents and County Councilperson Darrel Drown that would shift adult entertainment operations to manufacturing-zoned districts, mostly along Route 1 in Elkridge. This has raised concerns about inequity. Various proposals and discussions have occurred, with the County Council scheduled to hold hearings on zoning regulation amendments on October 20, 1997.
