The Viaduct – Vol 8 No 3 – June 1995

This June-July 1995 issue of “The Viaduct” focuses on various aspects of the Elkridge community.

A significant portion of the newsletter covers the Elkridge Community Association (ECA) and its activities. This includes reporting on a meeting where residents and officials addressed the need for an Elkridge post office and ZIP Code, highlighting the community’s frustrations with the current 21227 Baltimore ZIP Code. The ECA is also actively involved in forming a committee to create a justification package for a new ZIP Code. The issue also acknowledges the generous financial support from patrons for the publication of “The Viaduct.” The ECA board of directors for 1995 is listed.

Several community events are featured, such as the successful Elkridge Days Carnival and Parade, with a detailed list of winners in various categories. The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department (EVFD) is highlighted for its bingo events and the success of the parade.

Education is another key theme, with news from Elkridge Elementary School announcing the retirement of Principal Mary Jane Mitchell after a long and impactful career, and introducing the newly elected PTA officers. There are also updates from Rockburn Elementary School on end-of-year activities and summer programs. The opening of the new Elkridge Landing Middle School is previewed, including student orientation dates and the upcoming open house, with Kenneth T. Gill named as the new principal. The Ellicott Mills Middle School Wind Ensemble is celebrated for their superior rating at “Music in the Park.”

The newsletter also covers community development and local initiatives. Grace Church is celebrating its 150th anniversary and is embarking on a project to build affordable elder housing named Colonial Harbor Apartments. A community effort, spearheaded by the former Elkridge National Bank and the Elk Ridge Heritage Society, is underway to revitalize the area around the historic Viaduct bridge. The opening of the new BWI Observation Gallery is announced, providing a new attraction for the region.

Other community news includes the postponement of the Brian Wilson repair facility hearing. A resident of Quail Ridge expressed concerns about speeding and pet waste in their neighborhood. Jill Flores, owner/operator of the Elkridge McDonald’s, received an award for her leadership in employing individuals with disabilities. The Elkridge Area Jaycees announced their newly elected officers.

The newsletter includes regular features like “Know Thy Neighborhood,” which profiles Windsor at Pine Ridge Apartments, and “The Nurseryman’s Year,” offering insights into the operations of a local greenhouse. There’s also a “Poet’s Corner” featuring a poem by Elkridge resident Helen Voris.

Finally, the issue includes articles on flag etiquette, information on how to stamp out junk mail, updates from Patapsco Valley State Park, details on a hazardous household waste collection, and an “In Memoriam” section. Advertisements from local businesses support the publication.
