he April-May 1996 issue of The Viaduct covers various local news and events in Elkridge. A significant development is the renaming of the commercial and residential project near I-95 and Route 100 from “Centre 9500” to Lyndwood. This area will include Lyndwood Square, a shopping center scheduled to open next spring with a large Giant Food and Pharmacies. Another major business development is the Manekin Corporation’s $32 million warehouse and distribution facility at Troy Hill Corporate Park. The Long Gate Shopping Center is also set to open in October, featuring stores like Target and Safeway. In transportation news, the Route 100 extension to I-95 is expected to be completed in the fall, which will improve access to the interstate.
Linda Carey has been elected as the new president of the Elkridge Community Association, which serves the first election district of Howard County. The Elkridge Business and Professional Association is addressing juvenile crime with a meeting on April 16. Elkridge Appreciation Days have been moved to the last week of June. A flagpole of honor will be dedicated to Chick Nedzel at Rockburn Park in June. Elkridge is also beginning to plan for its role in the Howard County sesquicentennial in June 2001.
In education, Elkridge Elementary School and the Elkridge Branch Library have established a partnership. There was an error in the new phone book, omitting Elkridge Landing Middle School. High school attendance areas have been rezoned, affecting students in several neighborhoods. Howard High School has received national recognition.
Elkridge Family Dentistry has expanded its services by adding Dr. Tony Doumit, specializing in orthodontics. Unfortunately, the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department’s rescue squad vehicle was destroyed in an accident, and the community is urged to support their efforts to acquire a replacement. The Howard County 911 Emergency Operations Center held its annual open house. A new county service will begin on April 1, collecting unlimited grass, leaves, and light brush for recycling.
The Elkridge Heritage Society successfully hosted its Spring Fling. Jill Flores, the owner of Elkridge McDonald’s, received a Governor’s Arts Award. The publication also highlights local connections to the book “A Maryland Album” and the art exhibition featuring Dr. Ralph and Vera Baney.keep_pinSave to note
