This August-September 1996 issue of “The Viaduct” provides a snapshot of community life in Elkridge, Maryland, covering a range of topics from youth activities and local business developments to concerns about development and environmental issues.
One notable event was the generous donation of $5,000 from Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities to the Elkridge Youth Organization (EYO). This grant was presented at the Elkridge McDonald’s by Jill Flores, the owner/operator, and Ronald McDonald himself. The funds were designated to help the EYO purchase new safety equipment, baseball and softball gear, and training materials for coaches. The EYO serves over 1,200 children from Elkridge and surrounding communities like Catonsville, Ellicott City, Columbia, and Laurel.
The Elkridge Carnival was also a significant community event, which, despite a rainy start, enjoyed pleasant weather and a favorable turnout. Various local groups and churches participated, offering food, drink, games, and raffles for good causes. However, the carnival was marred by an altercation between Elkridge and Arbutus juveniles, requiring intervention from off-duty police, fire department members, carnival staff, and citizens like Les Stickles, Sandy Baker, David Grabowski, and T.J. Swiney. Raffle winners were announced, including Dana Priest who won a quilt benefiting the family of Christa Borcherding, and Barbara Blieler who won a crab feast raffle sponsored by the Jaycees. The Elkridge Business and Professional Association, the carnival’s sponsor, was hopeful about using the former drive-in theater site for the event next year.
Several planning and zoning matters were discussed in this issue. A proposed crematorium by Capitol Crematorium on South Hanover Road was a point of concern, with a public hearing held in August and another scheduled for September. The article raised questions about the petitioner’s experience and the financial viability of the operation, as well as neighbors’ concerns about potential hazardous waste disposal. Additionally, new residential developments were submitted to the Department of Planning and Zoning, including the Rausch Property, Dreher Property, Arbor Woods, and Corridor One-New Colony Village.
Concerns about over-development were voiced by Juanita Rutters, a resident of Downs Avenue. She expressed frustration over increased traffic and the impact of new housing projects near her home, especially in light of a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of a young child at the intersection of S. Hanover Road and U.S. Rt. 1. The Elkridge Community Association also keeps abreast of various issues including zoning changes and highway updates.
The issue also highlighted efforts to improve community facilities. Rockburn Branch Park was set to gain additional land, and the historic Clover Hill property within the park was undergoing renovation with plans for it to be available for events.
Regarding environmental concerns, residents living near I-95 anticipated an increase in highway noise due to a planned raise in the speed limit. The Elkridge Community Association receives information on highway updates. Furthermore, a task force was formed to address deer overpopulation in Howard County due to the damage they cause to crops and the potential for disease spread.
Local businesses featured in this issue include the 100th anniversary of J.H. Toomey & Sons, Inc., a lumber, paint, hardware, and fuel oil company with a long history in Elkridge. The opening of the new Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park was also announced, with ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremonies scheduled for September.
The Elkridge Senior Center was offering a variety of programs, including exercise classes, informational sessions on area codes, and visits from a podiatrist and manicurist. The VFW Post 8097 was celebrating its 50th anniversary with a dinner and dance.
This issue of “The Viaduct” serves as a valuable record of the events, concerns, and community spirit present in Elkridge during the late summer of 1996.
