Snapshot of the Brumbaugh House – March 2024

The first 3 pages of this document was for a grant we applied for, to the Maryland Historic Trust. Whether or not we are awarded anything remains to be seen, but the plan, eventually, is to fix the Doctor’s office, float new floors over old linoleum to protect it from further damage, fix any damage to plaster downstairs, repaint, and do some fixing up in the kitchen. We also want to start designing new high quality informational displays about Elkridge. The other two pages show some images of the state of the upstairs and the carriage house.

Note that things are discombobulated because we had a plumbing leak in the upstairs bathroom when we had turned on the water for an event. There was also water coming in the basement (not shown – I will add that soon) from outside. The county had a crushed culvert that was sending water down the back yard which slopes to the house. Even if the culvert were working (it has since been changed so that a curb reroutes water down Elkridge Heights Ave), the slope of the lawn would still send water in. There was also water coming in through the little roof over the Doctor’s office.

When the house was renovated in 2012, that roof, and the roof over the porch, were not replaced with the rest. In January 2024 we received a 20K grant from the county. So far, we have used that to replace the roof over the Doctor’s Office, install a French Drain, dry out the water from the plumbing leak, and cut away some brush near the house contributing to water issues.

We still have enough money to fix the inside of the Doctor’s Office, but we hope to get more grants to cover some of the other renovations, get HVAC, and improve our displays. We need to fix the roof and storm water management over the carriage house too, as there is mold in one corner.

The goal is to receive grants for the capital improvements and museum displays, and to get donations from our honored members for the day-to-day operations (energy costs, insurance, water, etc).
